The Great Northern Binocular Comet of 2002
C/2002 C1 Ikeya-Zhang on Feb 6th 2002.
Above is a pre-perihelion CCD image taken a few days after discovery.
This comet peaked at 3rd magnitude in March-April 2002 and was an impressive
binocular object visible from the Northern Hemisphere.
C/2002 C1 Ikeya-Zhang on June 2nd 2002, 80mm lens.
The comet made a return to the
southern hemisphere as a 6th magnitude object and fading.
This interesting comet has been linked to previous appearances in 1661 and 1273 and has thus been given a permanent periodic number 153P. It will return in 370 yrs time.
